102.3 KCUV - Rock Without Rules

airstaff

Nickname: Torch Ramrod
Birthday: November 20
How long have you been at KCUV: Since the first day we went on the air at AM1510 in 2003.  I was the second guy on the air in the midday shift.
What was your first job in radio: KADX, 105.1, Denver’s 24-hour jazz station.  I was hired as a part time DJ to do weekend overnights and was fired for being 3 hours late for my shift.  Management was a bit touchy.
What does "Rock Without Rules" mean to you:

Redundancy.  The idea of "rules" is the antithesis of the concept of rock.  "Rock" includes so much...from the glorious cacaphony of  early Pink Floyd to Captain Beefheart to the Thirteenth Floor Elevators to the uncompromising sonic choreography of Steely Dan, King Crimson and Peter Gabriel.  And everything in between and nearby.  Cash.  Hornsby.  Dylan.  Modest Mouse.  Zappa.  Local stuff-Otis Taylor, Devotchka, Angie Stevens.  It's a universe both difficult to define and expanding.  And it's on display each and every day on KCUV.

Favorite band/artist: Tough one.  Probably Frank Zappa, especially the large touring bands of the mid to late 80’s.
Most memorable concert experience: As a child of the 70’s, I probably don’t remember it.  But some highlights include the Zappa Halloween concerts at the Felt Forum in New York, Nirvana’s Halloween concert at the Paramount Theater in Seattle in 1991, David Bromberg at the Blue Note in Boulder circa 1980, The Allman Brothers in the pouring rain at Red Rocks in 1983, Frank Sinatra at America West Arena in 1995, King Crimson at UTEP/El Paso circa 1994, The Strawbs at Calderone Concert Hall on Long Island circa 1976, Procter & Bergman at My Father’s Place/Roslyn, Long Island circa 1975, The Dave Brubeck Quartet at Avery Fisher Hall/NYC circa 1974, Blood Sweat and Tears at Carnegie Hall circa 1970.  OK, I’ll stop now.
Favorite movie: The Milagro Beanfield War
Who makes you laugh: Dick Cheney and Homer Simpson
Favorite food: The Chicken Enchiladas in Mole sauce at La Cueva in Aurora
Favorite thing to do in Denver: Leave.  Go to the mountains to hike, snowshoe, bike, backpack.
What do you enjoying doing in your free time: As above
